A Systematic Review of Climate Change Risks to Communal Livestock Production and Response Strategies in South Africa

Livestock offers substantial opportunities for food security and sustainable development with appropriate adaptation to climate change. Nowadays, change is among the critical problems facing less privileged rural people directly depending on livestock survive. This paper aimed analyse existing literature identify knowledge gaps about impacts response strategies in production of South Africa. The study utilized a systematic review key search terms such as “climate change” (weather, variability), “livestock” (monogastric*ruminants), “impact” (heat stress; feeds; pasture; production; reproduction; health; vector-diseases), “adaptation” (strategies; vulnerability; risks; resilience). was run through scientific databases Google scholar, Science direct, Cab Sabinet Sematic targeting titles, abstracts keywords. From 62 suitable peer-reviewed publications examined current paper, five limitations were discovered, namely: (1) limited contextual studies Africa’s farming communities; (2) silo approach investigations (3) drawbacks mixed crop-livestock systems an effective change; (4) monogastric (5) geographic underrepresentation research progress different provinces within country. recommended improving coverage inclusion non-ruminants exposed climatic shocks. It further advised that gain responses impacts, mitigation should be context-specific holistic improve communities.
